Who We Are
CIIMAR is a leading research and advanced training institution of the University of Porto. It fosters an integrated approach to Ocean and coastal areas promoting the understanding and knowledge on physical, chemical and biological dynamics of these environments and the impact of natural and human disturbances. CIIMAR uses this knowledge-base to promote the natural capital and the sustained management of marine resources through monitoring of ecosystems health, optimization of aquaculture, and biotechnological exploitation of the resources for environmental and human health applications.
CIIMAR provides innovative solutions and products responding to actual economic and societal challenges. Among them are the demand for high-quality seafood, new drugs and marine products for industrial and medicinal needs, water quality, sustainable fisheries, preparedness for and mitigation of oil and HNS spills, environmental monitoring & risk assessment, preservation of ecosystems services, ocean & coastal management and Ocean Literacy.

What We Do
CIIMAR takes the lead in WP1, ensuring the effective organization and supervision of the INNOECOFOOD project. Responsibilities include coordinating activities, monitoring targets, facilitating communication between partners and the EC, and ensuring ethical, environmental, and gender considerations are addressed. CIIMAR plays a pivotal role in WP6, dedicated to developing a diverse range of non-conventional value-added food products derived from fish waste, spirulina, and insects. Furthermore, CIIMAR leads the tasks outlined in WP7, which focus on ensuring the quality and safety of products. CIIMAR team will also conduct evaluations of the environmental impact of fish, spirulina, and insect chains through Life Cycle Assessment methodologies. Finally, CIIMAR leads WP9, dedicated to Ethics Requirements that the project must comply with.
