What We Do
In the INNOECOFOOD project, BMAEU (MAKU) is involved in coordinating and implementation of Work Package 4 on optimizing the sustainable production of selected spirulina species and post-harvest processing in four ECOHUBS. Spirulina species from lakes in different ECOHUB locations will be characterized by molecular biology techniques for useful high protein, anti-pollution and high phycocyanin content. The novel variants will be compared with a standard commercial control variety, Spirulina platensis. The local species with the optimum properties will be farmed and processed for food and feed using AI sensors and IoT.
Specific Objectives
Explore our initiatives
Discover how we're advancing sustainability and innovation in aquaculture through these focused objectives.
Spirulina Scoping and Analysis
To undertake scoping study and collect diverse spirulina strains from local lakes in each African country area and analyze them by molecular sequencing.
Select and Grow Optimal Strains
To select and grow the optimum strains based on: nutrient and phycocyanin content, pollution mitigation.
Innovative Spirulina Processing
To process the selected spirulina strains innovatively by drying and encapsulation method and technologies.
